Temple overload at Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya is an ancient city a day tour away from Bangkok. The place was proclaimed to be one of the finest cities in the world until it was destroyed in the 1700s by the Burmese. Hmm..come to think of it- I did see some ancient relics from Cambodia & Thailand displayed in Burma, hehe nice job guys. I've been interested in seeing the place after reading up on Thailand a bit. While Haria & I were exploring Khao San road we managed to find a travel agent offering day tours for cheap. I went to Ayutthaya before my trip to Myanmar which worked out pretty well because after seeing Bagan, I was ruined for all the other temple destinations in SE Asia. There are a number of temples scattered across the valley. Our tour van stopped at the highlights.

Highlights: I think this was when my shoulders started hurting. It may be because I literally had my arms up the whole day from taking pictures. The temples are nice.
Cast of Characters: me & Haria from Indonesia
Logistics/ Links: All travel agencies in Bangkok offer the tour. You can just shop around for the best deals. We booked our tour at Khao San road. We were staying at Silom area so we had to wake up super early to meet up with the tour group back at Khao San. The tour drops you off at the same area. Wikitravel
When: I went early February, 2012. The weather was a bit warm but just right for me.
Location: Ayutthaya, Thailand.
Cost: We paid around $16/ person for the tour. That includes transpo, guide & lunch I think.
Trip Report: It was nice. There's a lot of tourists from all over the world. They have audio guides you can use. The temples are scattered across a vast area. I saw some tourists traveling around on mopeds. It was kind of warm so I thought the day tour van was a good way to go. Definitely not biking if you don't want to overheat. If you're going, bring back up camera batteries. There's a couple of folks selling fruits around the place. I swear Thailand has the most delicious genetically engineered fruits on the planet. Their coconut juice drinks are heavenly, their pineapples are good, their mangosteen, lychees...gaaah! The tour is nice, it's worth it.

There are soo many beheaded outdoor Buddha statues in SE Asia. Its sold in the black market or sitting in museums.

  1. I agree with you that this is a beautiful place. I recently visited city of Chiang Mai in Thailand. There I rented a motorcycle and visited several temples. Most impressed me was "Wat Mae Kaet Noi" - this is a temple of hell, in which there are many sculptures symbolizing human sins. A place, let's say, not for the faint of heart!
